I started taking piano lessons in third-grade, and by the time I was in eighth grade I had been through two teachers and could barely read the music. I remember dreading piano recital’s and Saturday morning theory classes. As an adult, I can muddle through. As a mom, I wanted more for my kids. Henry has been taking piano since September 2007. He has achieved 6 superior ratings in Federated, a national music competition, enjoys the not-your-typical piano recital’s (complete with full band), and has performed for special groups and at holiday events. At 14, he has been selected to accompany the high school choir where he attends. He can not only sight read music, but his level of playing has exceeded what is typical for his age and years in study. It takes a special kind of teacher to not only recognize musical gifts and talents, but to also be able to nurture and cultivate them. Deanna Williams is that kind of teacher. Her approach is real world. She believes in creating a solid musical foundation based on classic theory, yet somehow she makes it fun. She knows how to challenge her students, without pushing them over the edge. She is not only a friend to her students, but is also highly respected by them. From the birthday card my son receives each year, to the hours of extra work she puts in to making the recitals rock, we have found a hidden gem amongst the rubble. If you’re thinking of lessons for yourself or someone you love, be it piano, voice or both — look no further.
